Step Into the Painting: Indiana History and Culture Through Art

Abstract

Students will be given the opportunity to study a historical painting by a Hoosier artist. Several paintings have been pre-selected from the Haan Museum's collection to be used along with this program. Students will apply their growing academic skills and knowledge of Indiana and its relationships to other communities.

The skills and concepts could be related to students’ lives and could be presented in a
variety of hands-on activities which include:

  1. Collecting or examining documents, photographs, or sites
  2. Making a visual model (a photograph of the student participating in the same activity as the historical painting depicts)
  3. Talking with community resource persons
  4. Visiting historical buildings or locations

Vertically articulated lesson plans based on Indiana State Standards are available upon request, as well as reproductions of the pre-selected paintings for class study.
